Chicken Kali Mirch is a hot non-vegetarian dish. The dish comprises of chicken cooked in frothy hot gravy and seasoned with black pepper and other spices. The dish is suitable for any grand occasion like weddings, anniversaries, birthday parties, corporate parties etc. It is usually served fuming hot with plain rice, jeera rice or pulao. Some savor the dish with parathas as well. The dish is very popular in Northern and North-Western part ofIndia. It can serve as a good antidote for patients suffering from cold and flu.
My Non-Bengali neighbor taught me this recipe and last Sunday, I gave my family a good treat by serving them with chicken kali mirch. Here follows the recipe.

Ingredients
- Chicken-1/2 kg
- Oil-2 tablespoons
- Red chilly powder-1 tablespoon
- Coriander powder-1 tablespoon
- Turmeric powder-1/4 teaspoon
- Black pepper powder-1 teaspoon
- Garam masala powder-1/2 teaspoon
- Ginger paste-1 tablespoon
- Garlic paste-1 tablespoon
- Onion (chopped)-2
- Khus khus or poppy seeds-1 teaspoon
- Cashew nuts (soaked)-25 grams
- Tomatoes (chopped)-2
- Coriander leaves
- Salt to taste
Method
- Boil khus khus and chopped onion in a cup of water
- Grind the combination of soaked cashew nuts, boiled onion and khus khus to make a paste. Keep the paste aside.
- Also mix a part of the coriander leaves, tomatoes and black pepper powder and grind the mixture to a fine paste. Keep this paste aside as well.
- Heat oil in a pan. Add rest of the coriander leaves, turmeric powder and red chilly powder and sauté until the rawness vanishes.
- Then add ginger-garlic paste and sauté for sometime.
- Add the chicken pieces and sauté for about 5 minutes.
- Then add ½ cup water, cover and cook.
- When the chicken grows a bit tender, add garam masala, onion-khus khus paste and cook on a low flame.
- In another pan, heat oil; add tomato-coriander paste and sauté for sometime.
- When the oil leaves the sides, pour the cooked chicken along with the gravy in to the pan and mix well.
- Your chicken kali mirch is ready for serving
Serving Instruction
Serve hot with rice, pulao or paratha.
